A Room with a Viewfinder

Matt Polli is the Head Brewer at Randall’s, but he also takes great photos. Matt’s busy schedule means he doesn’t always have time for his hobby, so photography holidays are ideal for him. ‘I enjoy both travelling and photography and thought it would be the perfect combination. Looking for interesting places and people to photograph has meant I’ve spent more time exploring the countries than before and I’ve got a lot more out of the holidays as a result.’
Matt started off being interested in landscape photography, but his experiences abroad have sparked a passion for documentary/street photography. A tutor can explain the technical aspects of photography but also focus on the creative, which Matt finds inspiring. Spending time with photographers has another advantage: ‘They look at your photos without getting bored and don’t whinge when you spend half an hour taking 100 pictures of an old empty chair.’  Each destination has its own merits, but Matt describes Vietnam as ‘a photographer’s dream – it’s an eclectic mix of old and new, one minute a Mercedes flies by, the next a scooter with live pigs strapped to the back. You can spend an entire day sitting in the same place taking photos of the people passing by.’

Closer to home, Matt made the most of the 2011 Photography Festival and particularly enjoyed the Tony Ray Jones exhibition – ‘I’ve just bought a couple of his prints for my new house.’ Looking ahead to 2012, Matt agrees that coming to Guernsey during the Festival would make the perfect photography holiday, as you could see the exhibitions and take part in some workshops. ‘The Festival is a destination in itself for anyone interested in photography. The addition of photogenic and charming islands like Sark and Herm make it ideal. I also recommend Randall’s brewery tours!’

Guernsey sounds great! Can you advise the best way to get there and where to stay? It would be good to mix my holiday with the festival, can you remind me when it starts / ends?
